Background

Each course consists of 12 session/lecture weeks, with 36 hours in total (entire programme requires 16 credit points, 216 hours in total). Besides lectures, participantswill be given individual study time.

1.10 Course Registration
Participants should complete course registration before attending course activities, including lectures and assessments. Participants who execute course registration through e-GCIE should ensure registration procedure is successfully completed. Participants who are unable to complete course registration would not be allowed to attend any class activity, and their assignments will not be graded and credit points will not be recognized.

2. Programme Objectives
GCIE is a one-year full-time taught postgraduate programme, which is intended to enable participants to register for a specific IB educator certificate. It is offered to applicants who aim to engage in teaching IBDP courses.
nThis programme provides fundamental philosophy and concepts underlying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme including processes and classroom practice;
nIt provide professional pedagogy training as well as pedagogical content knowledge of IB math or IB Chinese, in which theories are integrated with practical skills, especially for classroom teaching;
nLearning activities involve lectures, seminars, visits and field experience, toinvestigate the contents of subject learning and effectiveness of teaching principles, to deepen the theoretical knowledge and to apply theory into real-life teaching.
3. Programme Structure
To be eligible to register for the IB certificate in teaching and learning, participants are required to complete 16 credit points (cps). Each course contains 2 cps, except that teaching practicum contains 4 cps.

The programme is made up of four modules:

Core courses develop participants’ understanding and skills in relation to the philosophy and concepts underlying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme including processes, culture and classroom practices.
Participants are required to complete three core courses (10 cps).Participants are required to complete a 6-week teaching practicum in local or overseas IB World schools in Semester II. Each participant will be assigned a professional tutor/mentor who is an experienced IB practitioner by the practicum school. No lectures will be delivered during teaching practicum.

Elective courses cater specific needs or interests of participants, depending on their majors, their specialized subject which individual participant intends to teach in IBDP courses.
4. Programme Attendance Requirement
Generally, this programme requires participants to meet 80% attendance for each course; otherwise, participants need to retake the course.
